The Welsh Government's health minister has urged people to holiday at home in Wales this year to support local tourism businesses and prevent coronavirus being re-imported.

Wales has had the lowest level of infection in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ for several weeks as well as the highest vaccination rate while cases in some other parts of the world have surged.

Bolton has served as a warning of the dangers of importing new variants of the virus with the º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government criticised for not acting earlier to halt travel from India.

With the summer approaching holidays are opening up to certain nations with lower infection rates but Welsh Government believes staying at home this year will both support Welsh businesses and protect the nation.

Health Minister Eluned Morgan said: "I know people are looking forward to a holiday after the year we have all had, but this is the year to holiday at home and enjoy everything Wales has to offer.

"I would encourage people to support local businesses in particular in the tourism and hospitality sector which have been hard hit by the pandemic.

“Travelling overseas is definitely not the same as it was before the pandemic – everyone will need to take a test before they leave and when they return and some people will need to quarantine on their return to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

“We’ve all worked really hard to bring coronavirus under control in Wales; we need to do everything we can to prevent coronavirus from being re-imported into Wales from travel.
