Welsh Government accused of neglecting North Wales in Metro spending commitments

Welsh Government has been accused of neglecting North Wales when it comes to investment in new Metro services.

The Labour government says it has committed over £1bn to the Metro programme in Wales, on line electrification in South Wales, and more rail services and ticket machines.

While some of that spend will be pan-Wales there is only £50m specifically targeted at North Wales which Clwyd West MS Darren Millar described as "grossly unfair".

Welsh Government said the overall future investment in the North Wales Metro is projected to be £1bn - with money spent on enhanced rail and bus services.

Wales has historically missed out on hundreds of millions of pounds in rail investment from º£½ÇÊÓÆµ Governments over many years compared to what it should receive under the Barnett formula. The country is also helping pay for HS2 despite the line not even entering Wales and analysis showing it will damage the Welsh economy.

Talking about the Welsh Government announcement, the Shadow Minister for North Wales Mr Millar said: “The people and communities of North Wales deserve our fair share of investment but yet again we are being let down by the Welsh Labour Government.

“It is grossly unfair that North Wales is receiving just £50 million of the £1,000 million being spent on metro projects in Wales. That figure is an insult to the people of North Wales, and it is no wonder that we feel like poor relations to people in the south.
