Wales sees unemployment rate fall to 4.4%

The rate compares to a º£½ÇÊÓƵ figure of 5.1% but is well up on the rate before the pandemic hit

The number of people unemployed in Wales fell in the three months to December according to the Office of National Statistics.

This morning the ONS published its latest labour market figures - showing Wales had an unemployment rate of 4.4%, down from 4.6%.

This compares to a º£½ÇÊÓƵ unemployment rate of 5.1% - the highest rate for five years.

In Wales there were 68,000 people looking for work and the number of people employed grew by 14,000 compared with the previous figures.

While the figure was positive compared to the last three months it is well up on the 3.3% unemployment rate in Wales before the pandemic hit.

There are also huge concerns about what will happen when furlough and other government support ends.

Parts of the Welsh economy like non-essential retail, hospitality and hair and beauty salons have been in lockdown since December 20.
