Virtual reality could transform command of battles or policing

An artificial reality system created by Birmingham scientists could transform the command and control of military operations or emergency responses.

The breakthrough – by the University of Birmingham and BAE systems – would see commanders wearing headsets to direct operations, giving them a direct vision of the action and relevant information.

Military and emergency response of troops and drones across a virtual representation of real situations.

The concept mixes the real and virtual world to allow operators to take control of their environments in a way they have not done before.

The briefcase-sized portable command centre can be set up anywhere to tackle emergency scenarios by creating a workspace that is rich in ‘virtual’ information.

It can also provide a ‘wearable cockpit’ to give pilots a customisable environment to enhance their situational awareness while also reducing the cost of cockpit upgrades.

The concept of ‘mixed reality’ allows the operator to see themselves and their surroundings along with virtual images, video feeds, objects and avatars, bringing together the critical battlefield elements in a single place.

The technology is brought to life by a headset such as those in real situations or in training.
