A Victorian cotton mill complex near Bury town centre looks set for poised for conversion into flats. Albion Mill and Albion House, which have been vacant but were most recently occupied by bespoke beds and mattresses company Pur-o-Lux since 1977, are set to be transformed under plans from developers Bracknell Properties.
The company aims to convert the first, second and third floors of the mill building into 20 flats. A previous application to convert the building off Bolton Road into 42 flats was withdrawn due to council concerns about 'noise, traffic and contamination'.
The revised plans submitted to Bury Council in the past week propose that the ground floor of Albion House will feature a communal entrance, two apartments, a communal area, gym, plant room and mail room.
Additional flats would be established on the upper floors of the larger mill building, with the ground floor designated for storage.
The site forms part of Bury's rich industrial history, with Albion Mills functioning as a cotton weaving and spinning building from the 1850s. Another building, Arctic Mill, was cleared between 1958 and 1978, while the Brooksmouth Mill site to the south-west was partially cleared by 1958, reports .
Supporting documents for the change of use application said: "The external building footprint will remain unchanged, with no plans for expansion or extension of the existing structure. Essentially, the proposals entail refurbishing the current retail building to accommodate residential use."
The submitted plans indicate that, if given the green light, the current parking area would be reconfigured to offer a total of 21 car parking spaces for the new residential units. Bury's planning officials are set to review the proposals in the forthcoming weeks.
