University College Birmingham has lodged plans to transform two vacant units at Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre into a state-of-the-art catering college. The university aims to repurpose the 304 square metre ground floor spaces, UG1 and UG1A, to provide top-notch training for those aspiring to enter the hospitality industry.

These units have remained unoccupied since 2010 and are situated near the end of Chelmsley Circle. The proposal, which was submitted to Solihull Council last month, seeks permission to switch from retail to educational use and includes the installation of a new shop front.

According to the design and access statement by D2 Planning Limited, the college is expected to operate from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, with aspirations to open occasionally on weekends.

The statement adds: "At present the unit has no shop front. A new aluminium shop front is proposed as shown on the submitted plans - this is similar to other shop fronts in the centre."

A public consultation is currently open, with a deadline for feedback set for February 5, reports . Those interested in reviewing the plans or commenting can find the application .
