University of Birmingham to host South Africa during 2015 Rugby World Cup

The campus, will play host to the 1995 and 2007 winners as one of 41 bases across England and Wales selected to house teams.

South Africa will be based at the university ahead of its Pool B clash against Samoa at on September 26, echoing causing sprinters including Usain Bolt to famously "Big up Birmingham" during a live TV interview.

In another boost to rugby fans in the city, RFC will host Samoa and Romania having been chosen from more than 100 venues which applied to be a base during the competition.

Sutton Coldfield RFC, which currently plays in National League 3 Midlands, will host Samoa ahead of the South Africa game while Romania will train here as it prepares for its match against Canada at Leicester City Stadium on October 6.

A team base consists of an outdoor and indoor training facility, a swimming pool, gym and hotel and will be utilised by the competing teams in the lead up to and during the six-week event.

The facilities must meet international team training standards and be located on one site or within close proximity of one another.

A mix of rugby clubs, schools, colleges, universities and dedicated training facilities will be utilised by the 20 teams.
