Unemployment in Wales at a record low, but economic inactivity still an issue

Unemployment in Wales has fallen to a record low, but economic inactivity has risen and remains above the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ average.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that in the final quarter of 2019 (October to December), the unemployment rate fell by 0.9% to 2.9% or just 45,000.

It was down 14,000 on Q3 and 21,000 on the year.

On the year, unemployment in Wales declined at a greater rate than of any other nation or region of the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ at 1.9%.

The employment rate for the adult of working age population in Wales was below the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ average of 76.5% at 74.4% – 1.48 million –people  and up 2.2% on the year.

Moreover, of adult working age economic inactivity remains a sticky issue, having rise on Q3 by 0.2% to 23.3%, well above the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ average of 20.5%.

Compared to the final quarter of 2018 economic inactivity was up 3%

The number of working age economically inactive in Wales in Q4 was 445,000, up 4,000 on Q3 and 56,000 on the year.
