º£½ÇÊÓƵ regions could lose £43 billion out of their economies as 27,000 jobs move to London and the South East as a result of the Heathrow third runway expansion, according to new research.

Charitable think tank New Economics Foundation has published a new report today which also claims the expansion would introduce an additional three to four million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent into the economy, equivalent to 100,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector.

Heathrow insists the expansion is needed and that the airport's plans have won support from across the country.

The third runway was approved more than three years ago and reports last year suggested it would not be completed until at least 2028.

With the new Government's first Budget coming next month, this new report examines the impact of expanding London's largest airport through a north-west runway on the º£½ÇÊÓƵ's other regions and nations.

It uses a combination of analysis of the official Department for Transport modelling and new data accessed via three Freedom of Information requests (see tables below).

It said it found a significant 'Heathrow effect' which had the potential to inflict "serious damage" on economies outside of London and the South East and argued that, in light of this, the third runway extension should be cancelled.
