Trojan Horse troubleshooter to take over city's education

Colin Diamond will succeed current education director Sally Taylor in interim capacity until   permanent replacement is found

A government troubleshooter sent into Birmingham to oversee school improvement has been put in charge of the council's education department.

Colin Diamond has taken over as interim director of education, replacing the current director Sally Taylor who retires at the end of the summer term.

A council statement said the pair would work together during a handover phase.

Mr Diamond will stay until a full-time appointment is made - probably early next year.

He is a Department for Education official who has been working in Birmingham as deputy education commissioner since last summer.

He was dispatched to Birmingham by Education Secretary Nicky Morgan - with responsibility for helping academy schools, those outside direct council control, recover from the Trojan Horse scandal.

The scandal saw groups of school governors trying to infiltrate schools and alter the curriculum towards a conservative Muslim ethos.

This included segregation of girls and boys and stopping sex education.
