Train ticket prices in Wales are being reduced by up to 14% on some services

Transport for Wales said the overall reduction is 1.1% but some routes will see increases

Rail passengers in Wales have received a new year boost with train fares falling.

While some prices will increase the average percentage change in fares for Transport for Wales services is -1.12%, meaning an overall reduction in ticket prices for the first time in many years.

This compares to a 2.8% overall increase across the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.

In North Wales prices after are down 10% (after RPI) while reductions of up to 14% (after RPI) are being made in the northern Valleys. 

Examples of the reductions include a Rhyl to Chester day return tickets going from £17.60 to £16.30 and a Bangor to Manchester (off peak) saver return going from £46.30 £42.90.

But a seven day season ticket between Cardiff and Caerphilly is up 2.8%, going from £25.20 to £25.90.

A TfW spokesman said: “We made a commitment when we took over the Wales and Borders rail service to reduce fares from the northern Valley Lines stations to reduce the disparity between these stations and others along the route.
