Top Everton official speaks out over heritage criticism of Bramley-Moore Dock stadium plans

Both the Victorian Society and Historic England have voiced their objection to the plans in recent days

Everton are to submit design changes to the West Stand at the club's proposed new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock

A top Everton FC official has spoken out after recent criticisms from heritage bodies were directed at the club over its Bramley-Moore Dock stadium plans.

Both the Victorian Society and Historic England have in recent days spoken out over the Premier League side's , with the former saying it will cause "incontrovertible harm", and the latter requesting that it be "called in" by the Government.

On Friday, Richard Kenyon, CEO of Everton in the Community, the club's official charity, said the club had gone to great lengths to not only protect the area's heritage - but to "enhance it, celebrate it and showcase it" with plans for the 52,000-seat venue.

Speaking at the Westminster Business Form's online event looking at the future of infrastructure in the Liverpool City Region, he said the club has in fact had "very little criticism or challenge".

But he said: "With any big scheme like this it's crucial that you take your time to set out the position and to give information and detail, and we've been very careful to do that over the last two years."

"We are looking at redeveloping a site that is part of the city's history but currently derelict. We wanted to put that front and centre of our position and explain why we were going to that site, the benefits of that not just to us, but the whole of the city region and most importantly, what we were doing to not impact heritage - but to enhance it, celebrate it and showcase it - to make it available to people.

"I think by putting all of that out there - very honestly and very much supported by the facts - we let people make their own decisions."

Friday's event was held online, and examined the next steps for the city region's local industrial strategy - covering aspects such as supporting business, research and development, and infrastructure investment.
