Home Secretary Theresa May has come under fire after claiming immigrants have forced "thousands" of British workers out of a job.

Birmingham MP Steve McCabe (Lab Selly Oak) said she was blaming immigrants for mistakes made by the Government.

He said: "There are fewer jobs than there should be because the Government stopped investing in the economy in the period after 2010."

But he said he also backed controls on immigration, saying: "Theresa May was actually in charge of immigration policy for the past five years so she's highlighting her own failure."

Mrs May's outspoken comments at the Conservative conference in Manchester have been seen as an attempt to stake her claim to the party leadership.

Along with London Mayor Boris Johnson and Chancellor George Osborne, she is expected to put herself forward as a candidate for Conservative leader when David Cameron stands down before 2020.

She said in her conference speech: "Now I know there are some people who say, 'yes there are costs of immigration, but the answer is to manage the consequences not reduce the numbers'.

"But not all of the consequences can be managed and doing so for many of them comes at a high price. We need to build 210,000 new homes every year to deal with rising demand.
