Tesco has聽pulled out of plans to build a supermarket in Moseley, to the delight of campaigners who had聽protested against the development for many years.
The site of the old Meteor Ford car dealership in St Mary鈥檚 Row,聽had been earmarked for a superstore, new premises for Wake Green Surgery, flats and a car park.
But the store chain confirmed a 鈥渂usiness decision鈥 had been taken to pull out.
The original plans faced considerable opposition when they were announced several years ago.
More than 2,500 campaigners signed petitions against it and residents鈥 associations and local politicians also objected.
Tesco spokesman Jonathan Simpson said: 鈥淲e have taken the decision not to go ahead with the scheme.
鈥淭here will be disappointment because many customers welcomed the possibility of a Tesco in the area.
鈥淲e will be working with the council and community groups to market the scheme to another developer.鈥
But Esther Boyd, of the Save Moseley Village group, said she was 鈥渄elighted鈥.聽
鈥淢oseley has been saved from a development which would have created heavy traffic in residential streets and near primary schools and would have increased the number of vacant shops,鈥 she said.
However,聽Mark Eftichiou, from Moseley Business Association, said he now feared the site would remain abandoned for years.
He said: 鈥淲e were looking forward to the potential of increasing footfall and a big retailer coming into the area, as well as a better quality surgery.
鈥淥ur fear is that nothing will happen to the site for years.鈥
A statement on the Wake Green Surgery website read: 鈥淭he future of the scheme is currently unknown, however, efforts are being made to ensure progression of the development in one guise or another.
鈥淭he inclusion of Wake Green Surgery as part of any development is still intended.
鈥淲ake Green Surgery has at no point owned or had any legal hold over the Meteor Ford site.鈥
