A tender process has begun to find a supplier of e-scooters for a new trail scheme across the West Midlands.

Transport chiefs have launched the initiative as councils in the region are set to commence a trial of the electric scooters from the end of the summer.

Around 30 operators have already expressed an interest in running the campaign which is part of wider plans to address the nation's transport usage in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic.

Transport for West Midlands is working with the seven West Midlands local authorities and Warwickshire County Council on the 12-month trial which will commence by the end of August following the appointment of an operator.

New legislation was passed by the Department of Transport earlier this month to accelerate the deployment of e-scooter trials in England, Scotland and Wales as their use was previously prohibited.

They will take place in dedicated zones in each local authority area which have been chosen where existing on-highway infrastructure is in place to accommodate e-scooter use safely.

Companies interested in operating the trial scheme will have to adhere to local rules focused on tackling issues of parking and safety.
