Support sought for Redditch needle factory museum plan

Campaign group launches ambitious drive to raise £1 million in just three days to save historic factory

A campaign group has launched an ambitious drive to raise £1 million in just three days as part of an 11-hour bid to save a historic Midland needle factory from the bulldozer and turn it into a museum.

Point-in-Time has set out to secure the funds as it strives to salvage the Abel Morrall needle factory in Redditch, which is set to be demolished on Monday July 14.

The demolition has been scheduled to coincide with the temporary closure of the railway line linking Redditch to Barnt Green.

The campaign group wants to convert the site into a working museum that will preserve and showcase the craft of needle-making for future generations.

If successful, it plans to dust off the cobwebs and restore equipment that has been mothballed for more than 30 years.

The site is located in the heart of Redditch  - a town which Point-in-Time says owes its existence to the area's needle-making heritage which dates back more than 300 years.

Sharon Burton Fletcher, spokeswoman for Point-in-Time, said: "We have a plan to transform the site into an arts, crafts and heritage centre for learning and leisure that would become the envy of the county and would sit at the heart of Redditch's creative community.

"Our appeal is urgent. We have only days to act before the bulldozers move in. Once that happens there is no return and this exciting opportunity to make a positive contribution to both the local and wider community will be lost - forever."
