Stockport County's Edgeley Park stadium decision delayed after late twist

Stockport County's plans to expand their Edgeley Park stadium have been hit by a delay after a last-minute twist ahead of a planning meeting on Thursday July 3

Stockport County's plans to enlarge their Edgeley Park stadium have been put on hold following a late twist.

The planning application for the expansion was set to be decided upon by councillors at a town hall planning committee meeting on Thursday night.

However, fresh information presented just before the meeting led councillors to postpone the decision to allow for a thorough assessment.

The club's application will be revisited by the planning committee at a future date.

Coun Steve Gribbon, Chair of the planning committee, stated: "Because of information that has come to light at short notice, we want to make sure that planning officers give us the correct information and the correct decision is made."

Local wildlife campaigners in Edgeley have urged the club to reconsider part of the application, which proposes building an 86-space car park over a green space behind the south stand.

Rob Eyre from the Edgeley Wildlife Reserve group warned the Local Democracy Reporting Service this week that the loss of the green land could "decimate" the animal populations residing in the area.

A letter from the group was also dispatched to the 12 councillors on Stockport's planning committee, imploring them to reassess the application in light of these concerns.
