The nomination period for the Birmingham Sports Awards is now well under way and we are relying on you to tell us which of our region’s coaches, teams or individuals has impressed you most over the past twelve months.
Taking place at Aston Villa Football Club on 18th September, the Awards look set to be a stunning opportunity for us to celebrate all the very best West Midlands sporting endeavour. There are 13 diverse categories there to be won, taking in both the professional and amateur spheres, and there is scope too to recognise our young and up and coming stars of the future.

In the meantime, however, we have taken pause to speak to the sponsors of the different award categories to find out more on why they chose to get involved with the event.
We recently spoke to Steve Hollingworth, the Assistant Director of Sport, Events and Parks at Birmingham City Council, to listen to his views on the subjects of sport, the community and the September’s glittering awards ceremony.
As sponsors of the Volunteer of The Year Award, Steve Hollingworth explained the simple reasons the Council elected to support this particular category.
“We have such a strong base of volunteers across our parks, and sport events, both community and international, who remain loyal, committed and enthusiastic. We are keen to express our gratitude and this award category provides us with the perfect opportunity to do that. We look forward to continuing our existing strong relationship with all those who support us on a voluntary basis.”
“Birmingham is hosting a variety of cultural and sporting events across our parks and venues in the coming year, and our volunteers will provide us with an exceptional amount of support and dedication. We are always keen to add to growing portfolio of volunteers and look forward to welcoming new and existing volunteers to work with us.”

Steve Hollingworth was also keen to underline the importance of the Awards as a vehicle through which Birmingham can highlight its successes. He believes they can also give the wider region something of a confidence boost and a reminder that hard work lies behind so much of what the area has built for itself over the years.
“The Birmingham Sports Awards recognises the outstanding achievements of some of the best talent that we have in our city. We are proud to be part of an event that rewards the exceptional successes of both professional and amateur sport that takes place in our community.
The Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate success and provide the recognition for all the dedication and commitment required to achieve that success.”
Steve Hollingworth went further, explaining that many of the attributes found in successful sports people also serve us well in business. He said “To be successful it is key to set short, medium and long term goals and plan for success. The leadership, commitment and dedication required to achieve in sport is a transferable skill that works well in the business environment.”
