Staff who smoke across Liverpool and Manchester cost their firms a staggering £670m each year, new figures show.

Stats revealing the annual potential wealth loss to businesses across the country have shown daily smoking breaks, excess sick pay and other health issues lead firms to shell out significantly more for those who haven’t kicked the habit.

Research done by vaping specialists Vapourcore claimed the losses to businesses in Greater Manchester was more than any other England region outside London - at £450m, while Merseyside came in fifth at £220m.

The West Midlands came in second with £399.5m, while West Yorkshire was third with £374.6m. Overall, the loss of productivity due to smoking costs businesses across the country was £8.4bn.

Charles Bloom, owner of Vapourcore, said: “The risks of smoking have always been highlighted from a health point of view, but rarely from the perspective of business and opportunity.

“The numbers revealed in this study prove that smoking remains a countrywide issue.

"However, instead of redistributing wealth into the local economy and improving the experiences of consumers, companies are having to spend their excess on facilitating employees’ smoking habits.”
