Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park milestone as stadium tops out

It has been delivered by GMI Construction Group for Scarborough Group International

Key stakeholders celebrate the latest construction milestone at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park Community Stadium.

The final piece of roof cladding has been lifted into place at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park’s Community Stadium.

The three-storey covered sports stadium, which will have a total capacity of 3,900 - including initial seating for 758 spectators - is being developed and managed by Scarborough Group International (SGI), and will be home to Sheffield Eagles Rugby League Club.

Yorkshire-headquartered principal contractor GMI Construction Group is now progressing with the final phase involving the fitting out of the internal space below the 58m by 30m roof.

It features 23,000 sq ft of commercial space and the company is now delivering the ancillary facilities and common areas before the project is handed over to SGI during the early part of this year.

Work started on the stadium just virtually a year ago following a socially distanced ground-breaking ceremony. Around 240 tonnes of steelwork, 2,350 tonnes of concrete and 100,000 blocks have been used in the project, with more than 10,000 tonnes of material moved as part of the earthworks.

Lee Powell, divisional managing director at GMI said: “Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is delivering a tangible legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. GMI is delighted to once again by working with Scarborough Group International to deliver this impressive new addition to the stadium skyline.

“GMI is well known for its prowess in the sports stadia and community environment arena having previously worked to build Rotherham FC’s fantastic new New York stadium together with new completed stand developments at Yorkshire County Cricket Club’s Headingley ground and for Leeds United at Elland Road and Carlisle United FC. We are very proud of the work we have done in all of these arenas.”
