A student landlord will have to tear down extensions to a terraced house after a government planning inspector ruled they were too large.

Residents in Selly Oak are celebrating after inspector Nigel Burrows ruled that large extensions to 223 Tiverton Road would overshadow neighbours and should be taken down within six months.

The home at 223 Tiverton Road, Selly Oak, was extended to accommodate up to eight students without planning permission.

A retrospective planning application was rejected by the council's planning committee in August and that decision was upheld by Mr Burrows on appeal.

Coun Karen McCarthy (Lab Selly Oak), who has backed residents objections to large extensions, warned the battle was not over.

She said: "I understand this was rejected because of the impact of the box extensions on the neighbours.

"While this decision is welcome, we still need to understand why these extensions are unacceptable while others are approved."
