Sale of NEC 'complete by the end of the year'

Bosses of the say its sale will be completed by the end of the year as they unveiled a small rise in turnover.

NEC executives say the sale process announced by owner Birmingham City Council, which includes the National Exhibition Centre, the and the was on schedule, with an agreement likely by the end of the calendar year.

Meanwhile, the group has seen a 1.7 per cent rise in revenues, despite suffering from a "shortfall in comedians".

Council leader Sir Albert Bore revealed with a host of inquiries from potential investors and would-be bidders.

Chief operating officer John Hornby told the Post: "We are bound by confidentiality in terms of the specific parties who have had an interest.

"The process continues and the city council would envisage that we would be in a position to complete by the end of 2014.

"If we end up under private ownership, it will give us more access to capital and enable us to take different risks. It will enable us to move at a different pace."

Mr Hornby said any sale would make the group, which supports almost 29,000 jobs, more flexible and less dependent on the exhibitions arm.
