Sajid Javid named Chancellor by new Prime Minister Boris Johnson

West Midlands MP says º£½ÇÊÓƵ has 'incredible opportunities' ahead

Sajid Javid said he was 'deeply honoured' to have been named Chancellor

Sajid Javid has been named the new Chancellor of the Exchequer - and has declared that the country has "incredible opportunities" ahead.

The Bromsgrove MP was appointed to Number 11 on a night when new PM Boris Johnson wielded the axe as he began forming a Cabinet to help him meet his vow to leave the EU by October 31.

Rochdale-born Mr Javid was Home Secretary under Theresa May and had stood against Mr Johnson and Jeremy Hunt in the Conservative leadership contest.

He succeeds Philip Hammond, who resigned earlier in the day. And he will now have to help Mr Johnson prepare for Brexit while finding money for schools, hospitals and infrastructure projects.

Tonight on Twitter Mr Javid said: "Deeply honoured to be appointed Chancellor by PM @BorisJohnson. Looking forward to working with @hmtreasury to prepare for leaving the EU, unifying our country and priming our economy for the incredible opportunities that lie ahead."

Mr Javid is a former managing director at Deutsche Bank and was reportedly ambitious to become Chancellor. He is the son of a bus driver whose father came to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ from Pakistan in the 1960s with just a pound in his pocket.

After he was  knocked out of the Tory leadership contest, Mr Javid said: "Work hard, have faith in your abilities, and don't let anyone try and cut you down to size or say you aren't a big enough figure to aim high.

"You have as much right as anyone to a seat at the top table, to be ambitious for yourself, and to make your voice heard."
