Sainsbury's jobs saved despite scrapping of night shift

Trade union jubilant after negotiating packages and redeployment as up to 100 supermarket workers were left facing redundancy

Jubilant unions have saved dozens of Midland supermarket jobs put at risk after Sainsbury's moved to scrap night shifts.

Weeks of talks over the retailer's decision to cut night working at stores in Kings Heath, Solihull, Kenilworth and Nuneaton have staved off the threat of job losses.

Up to 100 workers at the four stores had been facing redundancy.

But Unite union regional official Joe Clarke said all those affected were either leaving voluntarily or being redeployed elsewhere within Sainsbury's.

"They have now stepped away from where they were and altered their position," he said.

"Some of those with 25 to 30 years service have been given enhanced redundancy packages and are leaving the business.

"Some people are working their notice but we have won the fight against any compulsory redundancies.

"The rest of the people who said they wanted to stay have been accommodated with suitable alternative employment."
