Rich List 2013: No.=16 - John Bloor (£480m)

It’s been a good couple of years at John Bloor’s Bloor Holdings, due in no small part to the success at home and abroad of Triumph Motorcycles and the recovery of Bloor Homes.

It’s been a good couple of years at John Bloor’s Bloor Holdings, due in no small part to the success at home and abroad of Triumph Motorcycles and the recovery of Bloor Homes.

The Derbyshire-based company passed the £700 million turnover mark in the year to June 2012 with pre-tax profits up to £40.7 million compared to £22.8 million the previous year.

Bloor Holdings, parent company of Measham-based Bloor Homes and Hinckley-based Triumph Motorcycles recorded a turnover of £726.8 million for the year, up from £655.1 million.

Triumph Motorcycles turned over £342.3 million of the group’s sales in the year to 2012, slightly down on 2011, but market share was maintained.

Operating profit was down to £15.7 million from £22.3 million, partly as a result of costs incurred setting up a Brazilian manufacturing and sales operation. The Triumph 800 and 800XC adventure motorbikes have been selling well, and Tigers have been flying out of the showrooms.

The Speed Triple and the Street Triple, plus the Speedmaster and America Cruisers have also done well, helping Triumph sell nearly 50,000 machines, despite a difficult climate in the global motorcycle industry. Triumph – 100 per cent owned by John Bloor who rescued it from oblivion – has been selling well in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, Italy and Germany as well as making an impression in its new and growing markets of Brazil and India. 84.9 per cent of its production goes for export.

The slump in house sales has hit Bloor Homes hard over the few years, though things are now turning round. In 2009-10 Bloor Holdings returned to profit and has maintained the increase steadily. In the year to June 2012 to company posted turnover figures of £373 million, up from £300.9 million and the number of houses built increased from 1,755 to 2007.

New developments have been built in Melksham, Wednesbury, Yeovil and Droitwich. Homes range from one-bedroom apartments to seven bedroom luxury houses.
