The Freelander name was dispensed with as part of a strategy to develop a new 'family' of Discovery vehicles.
Land Rover billed the new model, which will go on sale in January 2015, as "the world's most versatile and capable premium compact SUV" and said its "bold and progressive design" would define the new Discovery family.

The compact SUV, which like the Freelander and Freelander2 will be built at the firm's Halewood plant in Merseyside, also gets an extra two seats, emulating Land Rover's existing Discovery which boasts three rows of seats.

It was just over a month until the results of a 15-year restoration programme inside a historic former factory could be enjoyed by the public.
The Newman Brothers Coffin Fitting Works, in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, had been undergoing a major renovation programme ahead of the October 24 opening date when it became a museum.
Newman Brothers was built in 1894 and supplied the undertaker trader for more than a century before closing its door in 1999, leaving most of the contents in place as if at the end of an ordinary working day.

The £26 million redevelopment of the NIA reached a milestone after the "sky needles" which tower 160ft over the city centre were installed.
The needles, standing at 52, 65 and 85ft high on the roof of the NIA, were put in place on September 9 as work on the King Edwards Road building drew closer to an end.
The operation took four hours for BAM Construction to complete, with a 48-hour road closure in place, allowing time for the rig and de-rig of the 500 tonne crane.
The different heights of the three needles is to symbolise the podium in athletics and reflect the NIA's rich sporting heritage from when it was first opened by athlete, Linford Christie, in October 1991.

Jaguar's new XE saloon represented a "pivotal moment" for the company as it prepared to do battle with Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the compact executive saloon market.
The new car was unveiled in a glitzy celebration at London's Earls Court, which saw performances by Emeli Sande, the Kaiser Chiefs and Eliza Doolittle.
Speaking ahead of its unveiling, Jaguar's global public relations manager Jonathan Griffiths said: "It is a pivotal moment for Jaguar.
"The launch of the XE represents an exciting new chapter in Jaguar's growth plans and we fully expect it to redefine the medium sports saloon."

Two of Birmingham's most 'at risk' landmark buildings were set to be saved as a brand new museum, which could become a major tourist attraction.
The Birmingham Municipal Bank, in Broad Street, is set to be transformed into a Museum of World Religions, which will bring the city's diverse faiths together under one roof.
Also earmarked for restoration is the stately Great Barr Hall, which has been derelict for the last 30 years. This would be a place of contemplation and host religious arts and music festivals.
If developed, the visitor attraction would stand as a western equivalent of the Museum of World Religions in Taipei.

Digbeth was set to become a mecca for fans of street art as it hosted the first City of Colours festival.
In preparation ahead of the big event on September 6, street artists were displaying their wares on walls and any other vacant space they would find around the district including renowned exponents such as Inkie, Loch Ness and Dale Grimshaw.
Organisers estimated that about 5,000 people were to attend the 10 venues which are running workshops and demonstrations.
