Restaurant plans for old Jewellery Quarter press factory

Following plans earlier this year to open a boxing gym, another Taylor & Challen building could find a new purpose in historic quarter

The former Taylor & Challen building at 48 Constitution Hill could house a new bar and restaurant

A former press factory dating back to the early 1900s in the could be turned into a new bar and restaurant.

The Taylor & Challen building at 48 Constitution Hill was built as part of series of factories in the vicinity and is currently used by clothing wholesaler Dex.

New plans have now been brought forward for a change of use of the Grade II listed building to create a bar and restaurant covering 7,220 sq ft and which is expected to create ten full- and part-time jobs.

The plan has been lodged by leaseholder Tarlochan Singh of Dex Trading, who told the Post : "We are finishing Dex as a clothing wholesaler and distributor as the business is just not there at the moment.

"This is purely a commercial decision. We have a potential occupier lined up, someone who already runs a restaurant, but we cannot say who that is at this stage until we get planning permission.

"We're at a delicate stage of the process but, from what we've heard, it shouldn't be too long before we secure planning permission."

A previous planning permission was granted in 2003 to convert the property into 16 apartments with a food and drink and office use but this never came to fruition.

According to Historic England, the four-storey building was constructed between 1912 and 1920, and subsequently extended in 1938, and was awarded Grade II listed stratus in 1982.
