Red tape holding back house-builders, says Persimmon director

Richard Oldroyd urges Government to cut the bureaucracy he says is getting in the way of progress in the housing market.

Richard Oldroyd, regional managing director of Persimmon Homes Midlands.

The regional managing director for one of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ’s leading housebuilders has said the Government needs to cut red tape so more new homes can be built.

Richard Oldroyd, of Persimmon Homes Midlands, said any moves to cut bureaucracy would help the housing market to continue its recovery.

He said: “We continue to work closely with local authorities in our region to move developments forward and we’re particularly looking forward to the results of the Government’s current consultation on the localised housing standards associated with obtaining planning consents.

"A simplification of the red tape relating to these requirements will undoubtedly enable us to deliver an increase in new homes more quickly.”

Mr Oldroyd stated the sector is gaining strength as the home-buyers become more confident of economic recovery.

He said: “The introduction of the Government-sponsored Help to Buy has proved particularly attractive, with over 3,000 new homes sold by Persimmon under this scheme.

“In our experience locally, it’s not just first time buyers who are taking advantage of the scheme, but also second time buyers looking to either move up the property ladder or simply cut the cost of their outgoings.”

Speaking about new sites, Mr Oldroyd said: “We are working to deliver more new homes to people who desperately need them.
