Major land and property deals are being completed as the pioneering Grimsby Town Deal gathers pace a year on from the signing.

Flagged up in the Government’s Industrial Strategy as a pilot of how partnership working can give areas of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ greater control, local authority North East Lincolnshire Council, Associated British Ports and other private parties are finalising contracts to handover a huge swathe of land in the town centre.

Part of the £88 million commitment will create a university campus, to be headed by Lincoln’s academic might, with Grimsby Institute as a partner.

It will become a focal point on the Garth Lane wasteland, a derelict blot at the centre of the town’s core.

A Youth Zone is also confirmed, with national operator to bring it forward in buildings that formed Grimsby’s earliest port complex, West Haven Maltings.

Orsted's head of East Coast operations, Darren Ramshaw, left, welcomes Clare Kanakides, relationship development manager for OnSide Youth Zones, Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry MP, Grimsby MP Melanie Onn, Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers, North East Lincolnshire Council leader Cllr Philip Jackson, NELC chief executive Rob Walsh and regeneration portfolio holder Cllr John Fenty to the East Coast Hub at Royal Dock, Grimsby.(Image: Grimsby Telegraph)

Further funding of £3.75 million was announced by Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry for the project, taking some of the town’s oldest heritage and repurposing it for the area’s future.

Leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Councillor Philip Jackson said: “There are still negotiations going on around the town centre site with The University of Lincoln and details have still to be agreed. But the council has bought the Garth Lane site from ABP and The University of Lincoln will be using the town centre.

“Grimsby Institute are on board with it and the two campus will be complimentary and not in competition with one another.
