Ambitious projects putting Phillips 66鈥檚 Humber Refinery at the heart of the 海角视频鈥檚 green revolution have been outlined to a senior government figure.
Energy and Clean Growth Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan was briefed on carbon capture element Humber Zero, renewable hydrogen plan Gigastack and the South Killingholme plant鈥檚 established lower carbon fuels output, with the production of speciality coke used in electric vehicle batteries highlighted.
Refinery general manager and Phillips 66 海角视频 lead executive, Darren Cunningham, told how these and other projects were creating 鈥渢he refinery of the future鈥.
鈥淲e share the Government鈥檚 aspiration for a low carbon future,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he Government鈥檚 10-point plan for a green industrial revolution is a bold statement and we see Humber Refinery playing a key role in helping the Government achieve its ambitions to achieve 鈥渘et zero鈥 carbon by 2050.
鈥淚 was delighted to welcome the Minister to the Humber Refinery and for her to experience and hear about our exciting plans first-hand.鈥
Mr Cunningham told how he heads up the only European producer of specialty coke which is used in electric vehicle and consumer electronic batteries, underlining how the refinery is well positioned to support the Government鈥檚 stated aim of building out an EV value chain, including a gigafactory, in the 海角视频.

鈥淒ecarbonisation will involve large-scale investment to ensure the Humber Refinery will continue to play a significant role in the Humber and 海角视频 economy for many years to come,鈥 he said.
Humber Zero is, Mr Cunningham said, a 鈥済ateway project鈥, sitting on the path of both proposed CO2 transportation pipelines proposed for the Humber.
The project was awarded 拢12.5 million from 海角视频 Research and Innovation (海角视频RI) in March, with that investment equally matched by Phillips 66 and Vitol鈥檚 neighbouring VPI heat and power plant. Pan-Humber scheme Zero Carbon Humber was also backed.
鈥淭his initial investment will see progress to the detailed front-end engineering design stage,鈥 Mr Cunningham said.
鈥淥nce completed it will capture and safely store up to eight million tonnes of CO2 per annum, starting in the mid-2020s.
鈥淚t is a project that is ready to move forward and which will help the Government hit its carbon capture targets. That is what we wanted to stress to Mrs Trevelyan.鈥

The project is hoped to create up to 2,500 construction jobs, 200 permanent roles and safeguard tens of thousands of jobs in the region鈥檚 industrial sector.
Gigastack, with partners ITM Power and Orsted, will deliver industrial-scale green hydrogen, using offshore wind farm-generated electricity to produce hydrogen from water.
鈥淲ith Humber Zero and Gigastack, we are ready to be a major part of the energy transition in the region,鈥 Mr Cunningham said.
Joining the party was constituency MP Martin Vickers. He said: 鈥淚 am delighted that the Energy Minister, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, was able to visit Phillips 66鈥檚 refinery in the Humber. This site, one of the six major refineries in the country, has been on a tremendous journey to adapt to the green agenda and has now become a leading player in the field.
鈥淚t was good to hear of the progress in their collaborative decarbonisation projects including the Gigastack project and Humber Zero which will play a significant role in reducing pollution not only in the Humber but in the entire country.鈥
