Where there's a Will there's a way to more tons

After 69 attempts in the championship, Bears' batsman can reflect on reaching three figures

Will Porterfield reflects with satisfaction on his long-awaited first championship century for Warwickshire – 118 against Somerset in the rain-affected draw at Edgbaston.

And having finally posted a ton in his 69th championship knock for the Bears, the Ireland captain is eager to add more three-figures scores.

Last month Ian Bell asserted that when Porterfield’s first championship ton for Warwickshire arrives, others will quickly follow. And the former Gloucestershire player intends that to be so as he continues to show much his best form, at county level, since moving to Edgbaston at the start of the 2011 season.

“It is nice to get off in the mark in the championship,” he said. “It is good to get one under my belt for the Bears because it has been a while.

“It was a frustrating year last year but this season I am seeing it pretty well and got a few runs in the games at Lancashire and Nottinghamshire.

“I was disappointed not to kick on at Lancashire. It was trickier at Notts but at Old Trafford that’s when I should have gone on and got 100 but it was a bit of a soft dismissal. It was nice to see it through and get the century this time.

“I am not sure if much has been said about it in the press but within the changing rooms not much has been said, to be fair. But I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about it at all.

“Now I have got that one out of the way and hopefully there are more to come in pretty quick succession.”
