Port operator Associated British Ports (ABP) has given its backing to a major convention event that will highlight opportunities to drive the economies of south Wales and the south-west of England.
The Western Gateway, a cross-border partnership stretching from Swansea to Swindon that brings together business, academia and government for the purpose of promoting growth and net zero, will stage its 2024 convention at the International Convention Centre Wales in Newport on October 17th.
ABP, which operates 21 ports across the Ƶ, has agreed to sponsor the convention’s net zero zone.
Ralph Windeatt, group head of business development at ABP said: “We are delighted to partner with the Western Gateway for this high-profile event in Newport. The convention provides a great platform for us to exhibit the enormous role ABP is playing, in delivering the future economy and supporting the Ƶ’s energy transition.

“Our ports will play a key role in developing low-carbon infrastructure such as hydrogen production, sustainable aviation fuel, carbon capture and storage, which will provide new opportunities for local communities. In addition, we are investing in new manufacturing facilities and major port infrastructure upgrades to support the development of floating offshore wind (FLOW) in the Celtic Sea.”
ABP has ambitious plans to transform the Port of Port Talbot into a major hub for Floating Offshore Wind (FLOW) and green energy development. In addition, they are one of the four consortium partners behind the Celtic Freeport (which as well as Port Talbot covers the Port of Milford Haven), which will be key in supporting the development of FLOW, as well as other forms of renewable energy in the Celtic Sea.
The Crown Estate, through its now live leasing round five, is inviting bidders to deliver three major floating offshore wind farms off the coasts of south-west Wales and the south-west of England. When completed they will have the capacity to power more than four million homes. The investment from successful bidders is expected to create 5,300 jobs and generate a £1.4bn economic boost.
