The Port of Newport has been named the 海角视频鈥檚 leading steel port for the seventh consecutive year, new government statistics show. According to the 海角视频 Department for Transport鈥檚 Port Freight Annual Statistics for 2022, the port exported almost 600,000 tonnes more steel than all other 14 major steel-handling 海角视频 ports combined.

Its steel exports reached 955,000 tonnes last year, representing 72% of the total 海角视频 exported iron and steel products from 海角视频 major ports. Aside from record steel exports, the port also leads in terms of total 海角视频 steel tonnage, handling 1.4m tonnes of iron and steel products in 2022 - 24% of the 海角视频鈥檚 total iron and steel products.

In Wales, the Port of Newport retained its position as the fourth busiest port by tonnage. It serves as Wales鈥檚 largest general cargo port, supporting an array of industries spanning not just steel, but mineral processing, agriculture, construction, recycled metals and forest products, and handling approximately 拢1bn worth of trade each year.

The Welsh port, which is operated by Associated British Ports (ABP), is the largest 海角视频 steel port in Wales and the 海角视频. ABP, which operates 21 ports around the 海角视频 including Newport, Cardiff and Port Talbot, said the port鈥檚 performance was underlined by its partnership with Tata Steel, serving as the primary 海角视频 port for finished products exported from Tata Steel鈥檚 facilities in south Wales.

The steel, manufactured at ABP鈥檚 Port at Port Talbot and finished at Llanwern near Newport Docks, finds its route to international markets through ABP鈥檚 Port of Newport. The port operator said the data 鈥渟olidifies Newport鈥檚 pivotal role in supporting the 海角视频鈥檚 steel industry and its contribution to the nation鈥檚 economy鈥�, supporting 4,100 jobs nationally and contributing 拢275m to the economy annually.

Paul Ager, divisional port manager for ABP, said: 鈥淣ewport鈥檚 history in steel dates back to the late 19th century, and ABP is proud to continue to support the port鈥檚 historic legacy and play an integral role in the success of the 海角视频鈥檚 steel industry. Newport鈥檚 steel expertise now extends to specialist steel products handler W.E. Dowds, which ABP acquired in 2018, and is helping to support the ongoing growth of the port.

鈥淎s the most easterly of ABP鈥檚 South Wales ports, and with excellent links to the nearby M4 and direct rail connections, the port occupies a prime location to service the 海角视频鈥檚 main industrial and commercial regions.鈥�
