A new cinema being created as part of a £50 million scheme in Nottinghamshire by a Derbyshire construction firm will be handed over before the end of the year.

Bowmer and Kirkland, which is headquartered at Heage, is delivering the Beeston Square development, which will feature 132 homes and an eight-screen cinema, on behalf of Broxtowe Borough Council.

Earlier this year, building work was suspended in March due to the coronavirus lockdown. But thanks to the implementation of social distancing measures, construction staff were able to return to site in late April.

The lockdown also had an impact on the delivery of materials for the development.

But now the borough council has said that the cinema element of the scheme is on course to be handed over to operator Arc Cinema before the year is out.

It has said that the cinema will be ready for fit-out in December, with the opening date now projected to be June, 2021.

Councillor Steve Carr, deputy leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, said: “The project is progressing really well.

“Covid-19 held it up for around five weeks, but the on-site team have been able to make up a lot of the time in recent weeks.
