Plans to bring new rail passenger services to south Birmingham have taken another step forward after transport chiefs lodge an application to build a new station.

The proposed site in Moseley is one of three new stations to be constructed on the Camp Hill line.

The green light has already been awarded to develop new stations in Hazelwell and Kings Heath with the Moseley project coming later in order to resolve engineering issues at the historic Moseley Tunnel.

The Moseley station will be built on vacant land between St Mary's Row and Woodbridge Road.

Transport for West Midlands hopes that, once open, the line will massively reduce congestion on the heavily used A435 Alcester Road and surrounding streets in what are densely populated parts of the city.

Stations on the Camp Hill line closed in the 1940s since when it has been used for freight and non-stop passenger services.

New services will go directly into Birmingham New Street initially, with long-term plans to send them to Moor Street which will also allow them to run much more regularly in a project known as the 'Bordesley Chords'.
