Liverpool City Council is set to back plans to build 1,500 waterfront homes at the iconic Festival Gardens site.

It represents a major step forward for the ambitious plans, with the cabinet set to approve the timeline for the works - which hopes for the first homes to be available "by 2022".

The cabinet will on Friday consider the report for a "comprehensive regeneration" of the 28-acre site, which has lain dormant for more than 20 years, and will include "eco-friendly" homes on the prime waterfront land.

That report lays out four major stepping stones, which are:

- To submit planning application for remediation of the Development Zone in December 2019

- Accept grant funding of £9.9m from Homes England

- Apply for funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority to fund remediation and infrastructure works

-Negotiate and complete legal agreements to pave the way for a residential planning application for 1,500 homes by Summer 2020
