Wi-Fi connections could soon be made available in all town centres across Mid Devon.
Mid Devon Council discussed the plans at an economy meeting, where development officer Chris Shears explained how they had been looking at funding the project,
He said: 鈥淲e鈥檙e looking at that for all three towns (Tiverton, Cullompton and Crediton) and at the moment we鈥檙e looking at raising funds through development contributions and seeking expert advice through regional organisations.
鈥淏ecause of the Lidl investment into Tiverton, that has created S106 money which can be used to fund a town centre Wi-Fi project. We will be looking at ways of raising funds for the other town centres as well.
鈥淗owever, that does mean Tiverton will be the pilot so obviously once its tried and tested we will do the real deal in Crediton.
鈥淏ecause Tiverton has got the funding in place, it will be the pilot for this. In terms of Tiverton project, that is looking at being entirely funded by S106 funding so it is unlikely Mid Devon would have to make a financial contribution to that.
"For ongoing costs, we鈥檙e also looking at seeing whether there are opportunities of using any system to help cover maintenance costs within that.
Economic development team leader John Bodley Scott added: 鈥淭he project isn鈥檛 just about the physical infrastructure.
鈥淲e recognise the need to support business to make the best use of the internet so that it will encourage them. We may put on training, so they utilise the opportunities that are there, particularly as people鈥檚 connectivity is better.鈥
