A former Sunday school in Ashton could be transformed into a contemporary apartment complex. The former Wesleyan Sunday School, situated off Crown Street, stands empty and semi-derelict.
Should the proposals be given the green light, the 19th-century edifice could see a new lease of life as a 20-unit residential block catering to 'young professionals' or 'elderly people looking to downsize'. Mr Khalid Essa, the applicant, plans to create 20 'high-quality' one-bedroom apartments, boasting views over Ashton town centre.
This would involve partial demolition of the existing structure, a pivot from an earlier approved plan which called for its complete razing. The developer now aims to preserve the building's principal characteristics and augment it 'in a sympathetic manner'.
There are no provisions for parking though a pay-and-display car park is adjacent. Each apartment will include a bicycle storage space, as detailed in the planning documents.
The site is located within 550 metres of Ashton Interchange, providing residents with public transport links. The planning documents state: "The overall concept for the proposal is to bring a high quality development within the town centre location and to help elderly members of the community to downsize or young professionals and first-time buyers to live close within the town and easy commuter routes.", reports .
The plans stated: "The overall design produces a striking landmark building in a key location, which respects the neighbouring buildings, and key landmark features."
"This is a key view of Ashton town centre for drivers approaching the area and it is considered that a high well designed building of quality is required in this location that will enhance the image of Ashton town centre."
