Persimmon pushing on with plans for huge housing scheme on edge of Midlands university town

If consent is given it would be the first stage in a 3,200 home development, which already has outline planning permission

Garendon Park, Loughborough, where houses are set to be built

National housebuilder Persimmon hopes to start work on plans that could see more than 3,000 homes built on the edge of a Midlands university town.

The developer has put forward a detailed application to build 220 homes on Garendon Park, on the outskirts of Loughborough, not far from junction 23 of the M1.

If consent is given it would be the first stage in a 3,200 home development, which already has outline planning permission.

The new homes would be a mix of one bedroom flats, two, three and four bedroom homes.

It comes three months after Wilson Bowden Developments gained outline planning permission to build a science park on 100 acres of farmland close to Loughborough University, on the same western side of the town.

That multi-million pound scheme will provide more than 960,000 sq ft of employment space and could create up to 4,000 jobs.

The scheme will sit next to the existing Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park, and help cement the town’s growing reputation as a hub for hi-technology at the very heart of the country.

Commenting on the new housing application, a spokesperson for Persimmon Homes North Midlands said: “We look forward to the council’s decision on our application and will continue to work and consult with all interested parties to deliver much need housing in the area identified.”
