Peel Group reaffirms Northern Powerhouse commitment with major projects underway in Manchester and Liverpool

Peel Group’s ambition to regenerate parts of Manchester and Liverpool as part of its Ocean Gateway scheme could be boosted by a further £10bn of capital investment over the next decade, say bosses.

Ocean Gateway is the long-term plan by of investment along the Manchester Ship Canal connecting Manchester with the Port of Liverpool.

Strongly embedded within the Northern Powerhouse, Ocean Gateway is a shared ambition aimed at the re-balancing of the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ economy with a focus on placemaking and regeneration.

The £50bn investment strategy launched in 2008, features MediaCityº£½ÇÊÓÆµ; TraffordCity; Liverpool Waters; Liverpool2; Wirral Waters; Protos in Cheshire; Port Salford and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

According to an independent review by AMION Consulting of the first 10 years of Ocean Gateway, the scheme has already delivered more than £5bn of private investment, creating 21,000 jobs, 2,700 student places and 5,000 new homes.

The review said such am impact will continue over the coming decade, potentially equating to almost 3 per cent of total GVA across the wider Ocean Gateway area.

Peter Nears, Peel Group’s strategic planning director, said: “With the right market conditions and support from local and national Government policies, together with close partnerships, we could see a further £10bn of capital investment in the Ocean Gateway over the next 10 years.”

Reaffirming its ambitious plans for the Ocean Gateway, Peel said a rebalancing framework is necessary to be driven by an explicit government commitment ‘that recognises the opportunities and challenges presented by disparities across the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.’
