Wales First minister Mark Drakeford says that there is a "pathway to Christmas" without another firebreak lockdown but warned everyone had to play their part.

He told BBC Wales that the evidence from the Chief Medical Officer for Wales was that the 17 day firebreak had succeeded, with cases falling.

The FM said that as long as this is not "frittered away" by people not following the guidance then he was confident there would not be a new circuit breaker before Christmas.

It comes as Northern Ireland is set to face a two-week period of tougher Covid-19 lockdown measures from next Friday and England remains in its lockdown until December 2.

Mr Drakeford also said that a common plan with other º£½ÇÊÓƵ nations for the Christmas was being worked on with the details to be discussed this week.

But he warned that there would be "payback" from everyone getting together over the festive period.

Talking about the firebreak helping bring down positive cases, he added: "We have to build on that and don't fritter all that away by going back to behaving in ways that will drive that back up again.

"Our plan has always been to find a pathway through to Christmas without needing to reimpose restrictions of the severity that we saw during the firebreak.
