Cardiff Central Station’s rail passenger facilities are getting an upgrade and refresh.

The Welsh Government’s transport body and operator of the Wales and Borders rail franchise, Transport for Wales, said the work will include improvements to the rail station’s waiting rooms and toilets.

The station’s signage is also being upgraded alongside the installation of a new water dispenser in the south concourse aimed at helping to reduce single-use plastic water bottles. The work, which will be completed by the end of December or early January, will also see new recycling and waste bins and new USB sockets in the main concourse and the waiting area on platform eight.

While the station is a devolved asset, it is managed by Transport for Wales on behalf of Network Rail.

The work is outside of a £110m-plus plans to improve access and ensuring platforms are suited for longer trains.

The º£½ÇÊÓƵ Government has agreed to provide £58m for the project, with £5m having been release to fund design work.

The City Deal for the Cardiff Capital Region has also agreed to provide a £40m funding contribution. As well as serving cross-border rail services, the Victorian built station is also a key transport hub for rail journeys across the region, which will be boosted with electrification of the Core Valley and Vale of Glamorgan Lines.
