More than 70 jobs look set to be lost at a meat processing plant in Llay, near Wrexham.

US food firm Tyson Foods said it is exploring options - including discontinuing the operations or selling the Wrexham facility.

Unite the union said it was devastating news for the 鈥渓oyal and dedicated鈥 workforce.

A Tyson Foods spokeswoman said: 鈥淧utting this proposal forward was a very difficult decision.

鈥淚t was based on a combination of factors including our ability to generate profitable growth and our need to adapt to shifting customer needs.

鈥淲e are currently consulting with our team members in Wrexham about the proposal to discontinue operations on 30 September 2020.鈥

There are 71 workers employed at the site.

Tyson Foods only acquired the business 12 months ago from BRF Wrexham Limited.

Jo Goodchild, Unite Wales regional officer, said 鈥淭his is devastating news for a loyal and dedicated workforce.

鈥淭he economy of north east Wales has seen a succession of large scale redundancies in recent months and today鈥檚 news is more bad news for the local area.

鈥淭his site was first opened in 1962 under Frimbo Foods and is one of the main employers in the locality of Llay in Wrexham.

鈥淪ome employees have worked at the site in excess of 40 years 鈥 it is the only job they have ever had. Unite will do everything it can to support our members affected through these challenging times.

鈥淲e will assist them to access all available help with retraining through our Wales Union Learning Fund project.鈥
