Newcastle has been named as the 鈥榮martest鈥 city in the 海角视频 in a guide to how technology is being used to improve people鈥檚 lives.
The city has been ranked 21st in the global Smart City Index, rising two places on last year鈥檚 ranking and in the process going ahead of London and Manchester to become the 海角视频鈥檚 highest-ranked community.
The Smart City Index, which is compiled by the Smart City Observatory, surveys approximately 120 residents nearly 200 cities around the world on how technology has improved their lives. Cities are scored on 39 different measures in areas such as health and safety, opportunities, mobility and governance. Newcastle scored highly for cultural activities and health services, as well as its use of technology to improve services to the public.

The accolade comes after Sunderland was named the 海角视频鈥檚 Smart City by the Digital Leaders organisation, giving the North East a potential advantage in attracting people and new businesses to come to the North East.
Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes said: 鈥淥ur reliance on technology has never been greater as we can all attest to with our experiences from the Covid-19 pandemic.
鈥淥ur city is home to some of world鈥檚 best and brightest organisations and businesses when it comes to pioneering technological research, and we are constantly striving to implement new technologies for the benefit of our residents.
鈥淚t gives me enormous pride that what takes place in Newcastle is being recognised on a global scale, and to be the leading 海角视频 city is testament to the work that takes place within the city.

The Smart City Index is topped by Singapore, followed by Zurich, Oslo and Taipei City. As the highest-ranked place in the 海角视频, Newcastle is placed ahead of London, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow.
Global cities beaten by Newcastle include Dubai, Los Angeles, Madrid and Vancouver.
Newcastle has increased its use of data since the opening of National Innovation Centre for Data and the Urban Observatory at the Helix development.
