Newcastle has been ranked ahead of some of the world’s best known cities in a global ranking of communities that use smart technology to affect people’s lives.

The Smart City Index ranks Newcastle at 23rd, ahead of larger places including Los Angeles, Berlin, Hong Kong and San Francisco.

The rankings are based on interviews with people living in cities around the world on how technology used in each city affects issues such as health and safety, mobility, activities, opportunities and governance.

People were also asked to select from a list of 15 indicators highlighting issues they felt were a priority for the city, with affordable housing and tackling unemployment coming out top for Newcastle.

It is hoped the global ranking – the first time Newcastle has appeared in the list – will help attract investment in the city, with Newcastle placed behind only London and Manchester in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ.

Newcastle City Council leader Nick Forbes said: “I couldn’t be prouder that Newcastle has joined more than 100 cities from across the world on this highly regarded global index.

“It is testament to how far this city has come in the last few years in becoming an internationally recognised Smart City.

“What makes this special is that it is based on feedback and perceptions from the people who live and work in our city, highlighting the difference data is making to their lives.
