The vice-chairman of Tranmere Rovers Football Club has revealed plans for a new stadium are "on the drawing board".

Nicola Palios said the club, which kicks off its League One campaign this weekend after two successive promotions, is exploring the possibility of a new ground - but that discussions are at an early stage.

Speaking exclusively to BusinessLive , Ms Palios said it would be a "massive and complicated project" for the club, who play Rochdale on Saturday at their Prenton Park home.

Speaking about the idea of a new ground, Ms Palios said: “It’s about more than one consideration - not just about crowd sizes, but also about being able to generate other incomes to sustain the football club for the long term - and about whether moving stadium would benefit the wider community.”

She said if any move were to take place, it could mean a “modern, state-of-the-art facility” including a concert venue - in a bid to help “make Wirral a more attractive place to live and visit”.

Ms Palios would not be drawn on any further details about the potential of a new stadium, but she said: “We have mooted it and we do talk to people about it from time to time. It would be a massive and complicated project. The idea is on the drawing board at this stage.”

The full interview, in which Ms Palios discusses diversity in football, whether Rovers compete with Liverpool and Everton for fans - and the club's whirlwind story, will be published on BusinessLive next week.
