New multi-million pound high rise apartment block planned as part of city’s regeneration

Site is next to £100 million of recently completed hotel, apartment, office and leisure schemes

Developers want to build a new apartment block opposite Highcross shopping centre

Another new apartment block could be built as part of the regeneration of Leicester city centre.

Developers want to build a new apartment block opposite Highcross shopping centre.

The site is next to a £50 million hotels, office and leisure scheme which was recently finished and near the £50 million Wullcomb apartment scheme which opened last year in Vaughan Way.

It would form part of the £250 million regeneration of the city’s Waterside area.

Under the latest plans, Leicester-based Living Choice Investments Ltd wants to demolish run-down industrial buildings in Highcross Street and replace them with an eight-storey building with more than 100 flats as well as shops on the ground floor.

The Wullcomb, Leicester

Documents submitted to Leicester City Council said: “For many years the Highcross area has suffered from being severed from the city centre by the ring road and this has contributed to it being characterised by poor quality townscape and a number of vacant sites and buildings that are in a poor condition.

“The proposal will deliver greatly needed residential development and commercial floor space on a significant brownfield site.”

Until recently it has been a struggle to get development to “leap the ring-road” and expand away from the city centre but the firm says it hopes its scheme could be the catalyst for even more building in the surrounding area.
