New images show progress on £100m Space Park Leicester

The site could one day include a low-cost satellite production line

Space Park Leicester

New images show the progress that has been made on the £100 million-plus Space Park Leicester.

The first phase of the new base for space research and big tech companies is well on its way to completion ahead of a July opening.

Much of the internal walls, carpets, lighting and external cladding are now in place.

The first part of the complex – which could eventually generate in the region of £750 million a year to the º£½ÇÊÓƵ economy and lead to 2,500 jobs – will act as an innovation, research and incubation facility for academics and private companies.

It is going up close to the on the northern outskirts of Leicester.

Much of the work done there will have an emphasis on analysing data sent down from satellites, to help with everything from modelling transport and traffic, to looking at global sea temperatures or deforestation in the Amazon.

Aerospace and technology companies such as Hewlett Packard, Airbus and Amazon have already signed up as tenants, and lead partner the University of Leicester hopes it could become a catalyst for other multi-nationals to bring millions of pounds of investment to the city.

The second stage will have state-of-the-art robot and AI assisted laboratory facilities for research and development into low-cost satellite production.
