A new drive to increase trade and investment levels between Sweden and Wales has been launched.
As part of an initiative from the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ Government its ambassadors and high commissioners have been asked by Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, to meet with businesses across the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ to support them to expand into key growth markets.
Over a dozen roadshows have taken place across the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ to date, with the latest seeing the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ’s ambassador to Sweden, Samantha Job, on a two-day mission to Wales where she sought to build connections with businesses and boost investment and trade with Sweden.
The Nordic country is the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ’s 13th biggest trading partner - a relationship that is worth over £36bn and supports thousands of jobs across Wales.
Wales exported goods with a value of nearly £330m to Sweden last year – which contributed 5.8% of the overall º£½ÇÊÓÆµ total. Sweden was the ninth largest export market for Welsh goods. There around 45 Swedish-owned companies in Wales, employing 2,700 people.
Swedish-owned ferry company Stena Line, which operates out of the Port of Holyhead, has welcomed the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ Government’s announcement that North Wales will be designated as the first AI growth zone in the º£½ÇÊÓÆµ.
The news comes after Stena Line revealed its plans for a new technology park at Prosperity Parc on Anglesey in September. The ambassador held discussions with a range of Welsh energy, defence and life sciences business leaders and will attended Wales Tech Week, where she meet Welsh Government Economy Secretary Rebecca Evans.
As well as meeting representatives from Stena Line, Ms Job visited Swedish military IT specialist MilDef, which has established its first production facility outside of Sweden at the Bro Tathan business park in the Vale of Glamorgan.
