More than one in four children are living in poverty in Wales, a new report has found. According to the data, almost 28% of children in Wales are living in poverty after housing costs.

The report also revealed 80% of children in poverty live in working households (before housing costs) in Wales. This was the second highest in the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, behind the south east of England (86%).

When compared to the rest of the º£½ÇÊÓƵ, Wales was below the º£½ÇÊÓƵ average (29.2%) but higher than Scotland (24.5%), Northern Ireland (22.2%), the south east (25.2%) and south west of England (26.9%).

The Welsh Government said it was doing everything it can to support people through the cost-of-living crisis and had provided more than £3.3bn via targeted programmes and schemes between 2022 and 2024.

The report, called ‘Local indicators of child poverty after housing costs, 2021/22’, was undertaken by Loughborough University for the End Child Poverty Coalition and reveals the extent of child poverty in Wales.

Welsh charities said it shows that financial security goes beyond people’s ability to budget but that the Welsh economy and social safety net aren’t working properly. They added that the need to take action had never been greater and called on the Welsh Government to make urgent updates to its Child Poverty Strategy.

Of all the Welsh local authorities, child poverty rates are highest in Blaenau Gwent (30.3%) and Ceredigion (30%). The report found that even in Monmouthshire, the local authority with the lowest child poverty rates, more than one in five children live in poverty (21.4%).
